Silent Mobile Verification (SMV), also referenced as Silent Network Authentication (SNA), is a cutting-edge, password-less authentication protocol. It is designed to verify the user's mobile number possession with high assurance and zero friction. SMV functions by initiating a secure, cryptographic handshake between the device's physical SIM card and the core Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in the background. This process strategically replaces the fragile shared secret (the OTP) with an unbreakable, verifiable fact tied to the telecom network. By eliminating manual code input, Silent Mobile Verification inherently prevents the attack vectors used in social engineering risks and phishing schemes.
How does Silent Mobile Verification work at the Network level?
Step 1
The Mobile Network Operator (MNO) activates the SIM with a unique, shared authentication key (Ki). This key is a secret known only to the MNO and the SIM; it is never transmitted over the network.
Step 2
The SMV process initiates an authentication challenge. The MNO sends a 128-bit random number (RAND) over the network to the SIM.
Step 3
The SIM and the MNO independently use the authentication key (Ki) and the random number (RAND) as inputs to a one-way cryptographic function. The output is a unique signed response (SRES).
Step 4
The SIM sends its calculated (SRES) back to the MNO.
Step 5
The MNO checks to ensure the two (SRES) values are in-sync. If they match, the identity is authenticated, confirming the user is in possession of the authorised SIM card.
